Summer Fitness for Seniors in Rhode Island
Summer is here and many seniors relish the opportunity to be outdoors without the worry of ice or snow. Now’s a great time to try out a new sport or recreational activity. Here are a few ideas for summer sports and physical activities in Rhode Island.
Pickleball: Though played by all ages, this racket sport is extremely popular with seniors because it is so adaptable to ability. With a funny name and famously collegial players, pickleball is a great sport to take up later in life! Find places to play pickleball in Rhode Island here.
Softball: Softball continues to be a popular sport for people over 50. Staying fit, getting fresh air and having fun as a team are just a few of the benefits of softball for seniors. Find senior softball leagues in New England here.
Yoga: This ancient practice has become a modern sensation. Yoga classes are available at private studios, seniors centers, community organizations and many other places. Although there are yoga classes designed specifically for seniors, good instructors will adapt the poses in almost any class to the individual needs of their students. Safe bets are gentle yoga, chair yoga and restorative yoga.
Tai Chi: With no special equipment or clothing to buy, tai chi is a wonderfully accessible activity that’s proven to help with balance and stability. Indoors or outdoors, tai chi is practiced throughout Rhode Island. Do a quick web search or contact a seniors center for help finding a tai chi class.
Swimming: Swimming is an excellent sport for seniors: it’s low-impact, offers a strength training and cardio workout, doesn’t cost much and is widely available! If you never took lessons, or just are not comfortable in the water, know that it’s never too late to learn to swim. Ask your local pool or YMCA about their beginners classes. Many pools also offer senior-oriented water fitness classes like aquafit or Aqua Zumba.
Walking: Walking is some of the very best physical activity there is, and costs nothing at all. Walking clubs are popular both outdoors and indoors. Nordic poles can offer substantial stability and core strengthening to seniors who need a bit of extra support, or simply want to boost their workout. For some extra motivation, why not sign up for a charity or fundraising walk?
Have a healthy, active summer!
