Innovative Intergenerational Programs in Rhode Island

We’ve long known that everyone benefits when intergenerational programs bring people of different ages, experiences and abilities together in a meaningful way. This month we’re looking at some of the remarkable intergenerational programs that exist right here in Rhode Island.

Students & Seniors
At Rhode Island College, nursing majors are currently participating in an “intergenerational service-learning pilot course” that pairs students with older adults at Charlesgate Park West, a citizen housing facility in Providence.  While the course is aimed at “teaching students about aging and how to be advocates for potential resources the older person may need,” it’s also been incredibly meaningful and enjoyable for both the students and the seniors participating. Multi-Generational Mural
At Riverzedge Arts in Woonsocket, a $2500 grant is bringing together after-school program students and PACE-RI members to design a mural, which will be painted by the students on a concrete wall in view of PACE’s day center. PACE noted that “participants who can get outside and those who remain inside will be able to enjoy the project!”

Book Clubs & Conversations
At arts-focused high school School One, intergenerational programs have been a mainstay since 2016. An Intergenerational Book Discussion Group sees students from School One and older adults from Hamilton House meet to discuss their own selections or titles from the Reading Across Rhode Island list.

Cyber-Seniors
The University of Rhode Island’s e-Gen Cyber Seniors program bridges both the generation AND the technology gap by giving college students a chance to mentor seniors in a variety of technology.  Seniors benefit from learning new skills to use smart phones, tablets and computers, while students learn teaching and communication skills.

Other innovative programs in Rhode Island include the Intergenerational Farmers Market Project, and the Saint Elizabeth Manor Early Learning Center.
