Volunteer Opportunities for Rhode Island Seniors
Did you know? Research has found that older people who volunteer live longer, have increased strength and energy, feel less isolated and suffer less depression. It’s true: volunteering can be as helpful for those who give their time and talent as those who receive.
Volunteering is especially valuable for seniors because it:
- ensures social connection
- prevents physical inactivity
- promotes mental wellness
- helps to develop new skills and keep current ones sharp
- offers new experiences
If you or a senior you care about are thinking about how to add meaning to your life, give back to your community, or simply find a fun way to fill your day, volunteering is a wonderful way to do just that! Here are some volunteer organizations and programs to get you started:
United Way of Rhode Island
Use the United Way’s volunteer center to find opportunities at more than 70 nonprofit organizations throughout the state. You can filter opportunities by distance, wheelchair accessibility, length of commitment, age range and much more.
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Corps
Throughout Rhode Island, RSVP programs help people aged 55 and up find ways to “contribute their skills, talent, and time to impact and improve conditions in their communities.” RSVP chapters include Cranston, East Bay, Northern RI and Westbay.
AARP Volunteer Opportunities
The AARP Foundation runs its own volunteer programs including Tax-Aide, which helps low-income taxpayers file their tax returns, the Driver Safety Program and the Experience Corps, “an intergenerational volunteer-based tutoring program that is proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become great readers by the end of third grade.” AARP also lists external volunteer positions through its Create the Good program.
Maybe there’s already a cause or organization that’s near and dear to your heart. Most non-profit organizations rely heavily on volunteer power. Why not inquire about volunteer opportunities there?
Or perhaps you’re not sure if you are ready for an ongoing volunteer commitment? Many events and organizations need volunteers for one-day events: think community clean-ups, charity walks, gala events, book sales, etc. A one-time event is a great way to dip your toe into volunteering waters.
