10 Ways to Stay Well During a COVID Winter

One of the silver linings of the pandemic was that it began after the worst of the winter weather was out of the way and we had spring and summer to look forward to. But as we begin to look ahead to colder weather, now is the time to plan for wellness during our first COVID winter. Here are ten ways to do just that.

10. Get a Flu Shot

Getting an influenza vaccination has always been important for seniors, but this year it’s particularly critical to do so, because keeping hospitalizations low is key to managing healthcare capacity during the pandemic. Experts say you should get your flu shot in September or October; the sooner, the better, since there are already cases of the seasonal flu being diagnosed.

9. Eat Well

Food is medicine, so the saying goes. Eating a well-balanced diet of fresh foods can help keep seniors’ immune systems robust and better able to fight off illness. Need help with getting groceries? Check out RIDelivers.

8. Move Your Body

Exercise has been a challenge for many during the pandemic, with seniors centers and gyms closed. Fortunately, there are many at-home exercise programs that can be followed with little to no special equipment.  The Rhode Island Virtual Community Center offers yoga, cardio dance, tai chi and much more free programming that you can do from the safety of home.

7. Connect with Loved Ones

Staying in touch with friends and family is vital for good mental health, and in this day and age there are so many ways to do so. Whether it’s through video calls, texting or good old-fashioned phone calls, taking time to connect will make a big difference between in-person visits. Need to hear a friendly voice? Project Hello matches RI seniors with volunteer callers for conversation and connection.

6. Get Fresh Air

Ample research shows that nature is good for your health! Spending time in green spaces (around lots of plants and trees) and blue spaces (close to rivers, oceans and ponds) boosts energy, improves memory, fights depression and offers many more benefits. Plus, visiting outdoors is safer during the pandemic. Whenever possible, dress for the weather and walk and talk with a friend outdoors.

5. Focus on the Fundamentals

Half a year into COVID, we mustn’t forget the fundamentals of prevention. That means being diligent with hand hygiene, masking and social distancing. Seniors should minimize non-essential outings in the community and shop at off-peak hours as much as possible.

4. Continue Your Medications

Be sure that you always have a good supply of any medications or health supplies that you require regularly. Many healthcare providers can arrange refills over the phone, and prescription delivery is also available in many places.

3. Don’t Put Off Healthcare

It can be scary going into a busy and potentially germ-filled medical office at the best of times, but don’t put off regular appointments with your healthcare providers. And similarly, don’t put off addressing new medical issues or concerns you have. Many doctors are offering or open to telephone calls or even video appointments.

2. Exercise Your Brain

Keep your wits sharp by doing things to strengthen your brain every day. Whether it’s learning a new skill, speaking another language, playing an instrument, doing jigsaw or word puzzles, playing cards or board games, challenging your mind helps to keep your brain healthy. Here’s a big list of ideas for exercising your brain.

1. Be Prepared for Winter Weather Emergencies

During any Rhode Island winter, extreme weather is a reality. Take time now to plan for emergencies and then rest a little easier knowing you’ll be well-prepared in the event of a storm.  The RI State Police Department of Public Safety has good information on hurricane and tropical storm preparedness. Seniors who may need extra help in an emergency should register for the Rhode Island Special Needs Emergency Registry.
